Overview of Norwegian demonstrations against Israel
Since the Israeli attack on Gaza began on December 28, there has been over 85 demonstrations against it in 59 different cities and locations in Norway. The demonstrations have gathered over 48,000 people, a Frontlinjer.no survey shows.
With help from our readers Frontlinjer.no has compiled a list of demonstrations held in Norway after the attack. The full list can be found at the bottom of this page, and can also be accessed via the map. Also note the northernmost demonstration: Longyearbyen, at 78 N, 80 people gathered at January 19 to protest.
The following is a wrap-up of the largest and most significant demonstrations:
The first city that gathered in disgust against the Israeli attack was Stavanger, where 300 people participated in a demonstration on Sunday December 28. The following day, protests were held in the capital Oslo in addition to demonstrations in Bergen and Tromsø. The following week several protests and demonstrations were held in a growing number of cities. After the Israeli invasion on January 3, protest was held outside the Israeli embassy in Oslo.
In the following week, dozens of protests were held in towns and cities in Norway. On January 8, over 22,300 people protested in 16 different towns and cities. Most of these demonstrations were a result of an initiative from the labor unions and other NGOs, and mainly took a centrist approach to the war, pressing for “Peace Now”, “Stop the war” and “Ceasefire now”.
On January 10, close to 15,000 participated in demonstrations at 24 different places. Most of these demonstrations were held by the Palestine Solidarity Committee and other solidarity organizations and featured much sharper and direct demands. At the Oslo demonstration, the Norwegian finance minister Kristin Halvorsen (Socialist Left Party) were photographed alongside a banner that read “USA and Israel the biggest axels of evil” (Reuters photo).
In Oslo, demonstrations on January 8 and 10 ended with massive clashes with police with over 200 arrested in total. The clashes have led the Palestine Solidarity Committee and other organizations abstaining from organizing new demonstrations in Oslo. However, the autonomous house Blitz has called for protests outside the Israeli embassy on January 17, and new protests are being held in other Norwegian cities.
Method: All demonstrations where a press report confirming the number of participants can be found, is added to the list. In case of conflicting numbers, an average sum is used.
